Ananta Acharya Puri M: FIR Registered in Boudh Over Alleged AI-Based Manipulation of Meter Reading Images

Boudh: A case of alleged manipulation of electricity meter reading records using AI-based image editing tools has surfaced in Boudh district. An FIR has been registered at Purunakatak Police Station against a meter reader following allegations of suppressing actual electricity consumption by digitally altering meter reading images, leading to incorrect billing and financial loss.

The alleged fraud came to light during routine scrutiny of digital meter reading records, when the monitoring system flagged unusual patterns. A preliminary inquiry found that meter reading photographs were allegedly edited before being uploaded into the billing system. Investigators suspect that the meter number was removed from the original image and the displayed reading was digitally modified, allowing the same photograph to be used for billing multiple consumers. The suspected malpractice is estimated to have caused a revenue loss of around ₹1.74 lakhs. Police have initiated an investigation into the matter.

Consumers have been advised to remain vigilant and verify that the meter reading mentioned in their monthly electricity bill matches the reading displayed on their electricity meter. Any discrepancy, suspicious billing pattern or unethical practice noticed during meter reading should be reported immediately to the nearest electricity office or the consumer helpline 1912 or 18002026. Officials of the power utility have said that technology-driven monitoring and regular audits will continue to ensure transparency, accuracy, and fairness in the billing process.
