Seaweed Farming catalyses Socio-Economic Empowerment among fisherwomen in Karaikal: Pilot Mariculture venture forges novel revenue streams under the Blue Economy
A pioneering mariculture intervention spearheaded by the Department of Fisheries, Government of Puducherry, in technical synergy with the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), has begun transforming coastal livelihood paradigms in the Karaikal region. Designed to alleviate economic vulnerabilities and diversify rural occupations, this pilot seaweed cultivation project is demonstrating tangible socio-economic empowerment among traditional fishing hamlets, positioning coastal fisherwomen as frontline beneficiaries of an emergent marine bio-economy.
In the coastal settlement of Pattinamcherry, a dedicated Self-Help Group (SHG) comprising seven fisherwomen has seamlessly operationalized this sustainable mariculture paradigm following comprehensive institutional training in propagative and harvesting protocols. Demonstrating remarkable biological turnover and commercial feasibility, an initial input of approximately four kilograms of propagule yields a harvest of nearly twenty kilograms within an expedited thirty-five-day vegetative cycle. This brief operational cycle affords multiple cultivation turnovers per annum, generating an incremental net revenue between ₹28,000 and ₹30,000 per harvest cycle, thereby reinforcing the household financial resilience of these artisanal communities while diminishing their precarious, singular dependence on marine capture fisheries.
Expanding beyond primary income augmentation, the enterprise underscores a zero-waste, value-accretive circular bio-economy. The harvested biomass serves as a premium raw material across diversified industrial verticals, primarily yielding high-efficiency organic bio-fertilizers and specialized soil conditioners for modern agronomy. Concurrently, the extracted compounds are channeled into high-value cosmetic and pharmaceutical formulations, while the subsequent organic residue is systematically repurposed into nutrient-rich livestock fodder. Shri Rajasekhar, Fisheries Inspector associated with the implementation, observed that the active initiatives spanning Pattinamcherry and Karukkalacherry are operating with exemplary efficacy, establishing a viable blueprint for community-anchored coastal entrepreneurship.
Underscoring the broader regional relevance and developmental salience of this model, a media delegation from Odisha led by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) Bhubaneswar visited the site today as part of their ongoing exposure tour to Puducherry to gain firsthand insight into various developmental activities and flagship projects supported by the Central Government. The visiting press corps undertook an extensive on-site appraisal of the integrated open-sea cage farming installations and nearshore seaweed cultivation matrices at the Karaikal cluster, engaging in granular dialogues with the beneficiary women and technical specialists to chronicle the institutional frameworks accelerating this intervention. In light of its minimal ecological footprint and virtually negligible demand for terrestrial resources, the Union Territory administration aims to progressively replicate this woman-led mariculture matrix across contiguous coastal belts of Puducherry and Karaikal.
