The District Police has launched its own special strategy to eradicate drug trafficking from Khurda district

Khurda:21/10 (Prabaha News) After the state capital Bhubaneswar, the white-collar mafia is now eyeing Khurda town.  Over the past few years, Khurda town and its adjoining areas have become a hotbed of brown sugar traders. Though the STF, Crime Branch, Local Police and Excise Department have conducted raids on various occasions in the recent past and arrested several drug peddlers, Khurda town has not been completely freed from the clutches of brown sugar. Now that time in many places in khordha, these drug traders are luring money in a short span of time, so many educated unemployed youth as well as the women of the elite class are getting involved in this business. While there has been resentment among the local people, the police are now in full action mode, managing to arrest many drug mafias, while now a special campaign has been launched to root out the brown sugar business from the town.

In the recent past, the police’s campaign has taken a heavy toll on anti-social elements involved in these deadly trades. In a bid to curb the unethical activities of the traders involved, the police have seized their illegal properties and also not excluded the houses they had built on government land by arm-twisting political figures. It has not shied away from dusting these illegal houses. Meanwhile, the Khurda police today arrested three more women and three men from a slum near Samantarapur Thengahat son under Khurda Model Police Station limits after the district administration demolished the illegal houses of some such drug peddlers on May 19.

Acting on a tip-off from a reliable source, a team of Adarsh police station raided the house of Mahendra Behera of the slum near Thengahat in Samantarapur and seized brown sugar worth over Rs 5 lakh and gold ornaments worth over 500 grams and Eight hundred grams of silver ornaments have been seized and Rs 13.8 lakh in cash has also been seized from the accused. Police have arrested Mahendra Behera’s wife Kani Behera (38) along with Swarnalata Behera (40) and Damayanti Nayak (40).

All the arrested women are said to be members of the same family. Similarly, Kulmani Behera (30) and Nilamani Behera (28) of Gudum village under Sadar police station have also been arrested, while birendra Sahu has been arrested, a case has been registered in this regard under NDPSU/S-21(b)/29 Act at Khurda Model Police Station Case No. 5 21 and all the accused have been sent to court, Khurda District Superintendent of Police Siddharth Kataria said at a press conference and in the coming days, the police will further tighten the white-collar operation special drive and confiscate the movable and immovable property illegally acquired by all the traders involved in the brown sugar business, and if it is found to be illegally running the drug trade by claiming to be landless, then they will be deprived of all kinds of government assistance and with the help of the administration, they will be completely evicted from the place.

While the district police’s action has been lauded in the local intellectual circles, there has been panic among those indulging in the brown sugar trade over the police action.
