Burla/Sonepur,prabaha news : TP Western Odisha Distribution Limited (TPWODL) has detected multiple cases of electricity theft by the use of sophisticated remote-controlled and timer-based devices in its Sonepur Electrical Division.

The cases have come to notice by following detailed meter data analysis, which flagged abnormal and suspicious power consumption patterns. Based on these inputs, a special inspection drive was conducted jointly by officials from the corporate office and the Sonepur divisional team.

During inspections at four consumer premises, it was found that electricity meters had been deliberately tampered with using remote control mechanisms and timers to suppress actual consumption and avoid proper billing.

As per Section 135 of the Electricity Act, 2003, electricity theft is a punishable offence. It can lead to penalties, recovery of civil liability, disconnection of power supply, and criminal prosecution, including imprisonment of up to three years and/or fine, depending on the severity of the offence.

Following the action, three consumers admitted to their offence and deposited penalty amounts, while legal proceedings have been initiated against one consumer for non-compliance.

TPWODL has informed consumers and public at large that, the use of electronic or remote-controlled devices for meter manipulation is a serious criminal offence and will be dealt without any leniency. The utility has further strengthened its enforcement measures through advanced data analytics, smart meter surveillance, and targeted inspections.

TPWODL appealed to consumers to avoid illegal practices and cooperate in maintaining a transparent and reliable power distribution system, ensuring fairness for honest consumers.
