Vedanta Lanjigarh commemorates India’s 78th Independence Day along with community members

Lanjigarh, Kalahandi – Vedanta Lanjigarh, India’s premier producer of smelter-grade alumina and a unit of Vedanta Aluminium, celebrated India’s 78th Independence Day with a patriotic celebration witnessing participation from its employees and the communities living near its operations. Marking the occasion by underscoring the company’s contributionstoa ‘Viksit Bharat’, the campaign encapsulated a plantation drive, Har Ghar Tiranga flag distribution campaign, flag hoisting ceremony and cultural programs.The campaign saw participation from over 2000 villagers across 20 villages with more than 100 employees and project implementing partners.

The event was a showcase of the company’s vision to contribute to the larger goal of nation-building. Under the aegis of the company’s Project Sangam which aims to create sustainable and climate resilient livelihood opportunities for the underserved communities, a plantation drive was conducted that saw over 500 saplings being planted by employee volunteers and community members. Several saplings were also planted around local ponds, which will act as natural embankments to prevent soil erosion and flooding of the surrounding areas.

In addition, the Har Ghar Tiranga initiative witnessed the company distributing over 500 flags across the neighboring villages, enabling the residents to participate in the Independence Day celebrations with fervor.  Moreover, Vedanta Lanjigarh’s team membershoisted the national flag within the plant premises andfelicitated its young leaders for their significant contributions in making the business safeand sustainable. Lastly, the company’s business partners showcased cultural performances too.

Vedanta Aluminium has made significant contributions towards socio-economic development of Odisha and is helping transform the state into the Aluminium Hub of India through its operations, which include the world’s largest aluminium plant (1.8 MTPA capacity) in Jharsuguda and a world-class alumina refinery (3.5 MTPA capacity) in Kalahandi, designed to be one of the most sustainable refineries in the world with among the lowest carbon footprints. The company is producing nearly 50% of India’s aluminium, contributing to its growth and progress.

Moreover, Vedanta Lanjigarh’s broader social interventions include community development efforts in the areas of sustainable livelihood, quality education, women empowerment, health,sanitation and community infrastructure. These initiatives reach over 67 villages, empowering more than 4,000 women through 378 SHGs, providing qualitative and doorstep healthcare services to about 60,000 people annually, and supporting over 4,000 children through Lanjigarh’s first English-medium school – the DAV Vedanta International School and over 200 Nand Ghars equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. Moreover, around 200 youths have benefitted from sports and skills training initiatives undertaken by the company. In addition, Vedanta Lanjigarh has also launched Project Panchhi, an innovative effort that has positively impacted nearly 50 girls from underprivileged communities, providing them with financial support for completing their studies and subsequent employment opportunities.
