Full-scale on-site mock drill on fire safety preparedness organized at Tata Steel Kalinganagar
Kalinganagar, June 30, 2026: With an objective to enhance preparedness and response mechanisms for fire disasters, a works level on-site mock drill on scenario ‘Hydrogen Release & Fire in Hydrogen Buffer Vessel’ was organised at Cold Rolling Mill, Tata Steel Kalinganagar on Tuesday.
The mock drill organised under the aegis of Directorate of Factories & Boilers, Government of Odisha in collaboration with District Administration, Jajpur aimed at ensuring effective coordination among key stakeholders, including mutual aid partner industries, and emergency response teams.
The mock drill was witnessed by Er Umesh Chandra Sutar, Deputy Director, Directorate of Factories & Boilers, Jajpur Road Division; Er Debashis Nayak, Assistant Director, Directorate of Factories & Boilers, Jajpur Road Division; Ashok Behera, District Emergency Officer, Jajpur; Tapas Kumar Mantri, Fire Officer, Jajpur Road; Ramesh Behera, Sub-Inspector, Kalinganagar Police Station; Sankar Biswas, Chief of Mechanical Maintenance, TSK; Pankaj Harishchandra Bhure, Chief of Electrical Maintenance, TSK; Kamla Kant, Chief, Electrical Maintenance – Steel & Mills, Matsyendra Nath Shukla, Chief Mechanical Maintenance – Steel & Mills TSK; Ravi Marik, Chief, Corporate Services, TSK; Pravesh Narang, Chief, Cold Rolling Mill, TSK; and Vilas Gaikwad, Chief Safety, Odisha. Among others present were senior officials of Tata steel Kalinganagar, Jindal Stainless, Neelachal Ispat Nigam and VISA Steel.
The full-scale on-site mock drill also intended to test the response capability towards potential fire incident at Hydrogen Buffer Vessel area at Cold Rolling Mill. This meant that while no incident actually took place, the mock drill entailed creation of simulated conditions on various aspects to test the readiness of different teams including Safety, Fire Brigade, Medical, Security & Operations. During the mock drill, the teams were expected to reach the site within defined timelines, ensure evacuation of personnel from the designated site, provide appropriate medical care, timely monitoring and containment of the simulated crisis and take note of practical learnings to address real time situation.
