TPWODL Celebrates Indigenous Heritage and Voices Across Western Odisha

Burla, August 10, 2026: TP Western Odisha Distribution Limited (TPWODL), a joint venture of Tata Power and Government of Odisha celebrated the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples across five districts of its operational area in Western Odisha, bringing together five tribal communities to celebrate indigenous heritage, raise awareness about tribal rights.

Organised under TPWODL’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Affirmative Action (AA) initiative, the celebrations brought together Self-Help Groups (SHGs), members from schedule tribe and schedule cast and other Indigenous groups in Sundargada, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Debagada. The programme engaged five communities, namely Kondh, Saura, Gond, Santala and Bhuiyan, creating a platform for dialogue and greater awareness around the contributions and aspirations of Indigenous and tribal communities.

The programme highlighted the importance of preserving rich cultural heritage, traditional practices and Indigenous knowledge systems passed down through generations. Discussions also focused on the significance of protecting Indigenous rights and ensuring that traditional wisdom continues to find relevance in a rapidly changing world. A key focus of the celebrations was the role of Indigenous communities in environmental conservation and climate resilience. Their traditional, nature-based practices and deep understanding of local ecosystems offer valuable lessons in sustainable living and responsible management of natural resources.

The celebrations reinforced TPWODL’s commitment to inclusive development and meaningful community engagement, while providing a platform for Indigenous and tribal communities to share their perspectives, traditions and knowledge. Through initiatives such as Affirmative Action (AA), TPWODL continues to engage with communities across its operational areas, with a focus on empowerment, inclusion and sustainable community development.
