SCB Medical College And Hospital Soon To Have Odisha’s First Ever Bone Bank

Cuttack: In a first, Odisha government is to set up a ‘bone bank’ on SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH) premises in Cuttack soon. With tendering for machines, the orthopedic department of SCBMCH has completed infrastructural requirements for the purpose, Head of the Department said today.

The financial and technical bids received for earlier floated tender are to be opened on May 29.

A source said that bones damaged due to road accidents or otherwise during surgical operations and amputations were previously being wasted. After completion of the ambitious project, bones collected in such circumstances will be preserved for the future and used in emergent situations.

Needy patients will be benefitted from the bank as bones can be transplanted in their bodies.

On being contacted, orthopedic department Head Dr Nirmal Chandra Mohapatra said, “A bone bank facility was not previously available in Odisha. Bones can be preserved for quite a long time.”
